Join artists Mati McDonough and Faith Evans-Sills as we spend a weekend diving deep into soul filling painting at a mansion by the beach in Charleston, South Carolina. We will spend the weekend down a dirt road, just a short walk to the ocean—gorgeous Folly beach. We’ll have expansive marsh views from our large deck, a private pool, and so many chairs and hammocks. This will be a time to relax and enjoy gathering inspiration at every turn. We’ve designed the painting projects to be for all levels. In our paintings we’ll explore a sense of place, bringing the local beauty into our work through mark making prompts, local color and exploring layered painting techniques. Participants will focus on the process of seeing, finding personal meaning by completing specific paintings exercises which Mati and Faith will lead you through. As the weekend progresses we’ll develop more complex layered work, that will incorporate personal discoveries through experimentation. Throughout the workshop Mati and Faith will demonstrate many of their personal painting techniques. Here are a few of the projects we’ll create:
We’ll enjoy a daily watercolor practice of explorations based on our location, our house will have a view of the gorgeous expansive marshes that give this area of South Carolina the “low-country” name. Rich with wild life and views where we will drink in the natural inspiration both from the large patios of our house, and from the beauty of Folly beach just two blocks away. We’ll take our watercolor paint kits on location to paint outside and breathe in the ocean air!
We’ll create large layered paintings, learning skills that you’ll be able to take home with you and use again and again in your art practice…. acrylic painting, collage, image transfer, painting with silkscreens and stencils, mandala painting. Our emphasis will be on fun and experimenting with a variety of mixed media while developing relationships and learning from each other!

WHAT’S INCLUDED:
2 and a half days chock full of art lessons with both Mati and Faith along with a buffet of supplies for you to use. Nourishing catered lunch and snacks prepared daily by a local chef. Full access to our relaxing space with an infinity pool, the ocean nearby and plenty of places to lounge and sink into your painting process.
We’ll kick things off on Thursday afternoon with an Opening Circle, we’ll get to know each other as we create flower crowns and enjoy a magnificent view of the sunset from the balcony of the beach house with cocktails and snacks. On Friday we’ll paint from 10am to 4pm, with a break for a catered lunch. That evening we’ll have the option of meeting in historic downtown Charleston to attend the monthly First Friday Art Gallery Walk and have dinner at a rooftop restaurant. On Saturday we’ll dive into painting from 10am to 4pm with a break for another delicious catered lunch. In the evening, we’ll have the option of meeting at local favorite spot Taco Boy to enjoy a closing dinner together.

The weekend workshop will be held at a large luxury beach house on gorgeous Folly Beach, SC a half hour drive outside of Charleston. Detailed directions will be sent to you once you register. We have a limited number of luxury lodging options available at the Beach House mansion for 3 nights, Thursday Nov. 3rd through Sunday Nov. 6th, scroll down for info!
SCHEDULE:
Thursday: 3 p.m.- 6 p.m. Arrival and Opening Flower Crown Circle, sunset cocktails and snacks. Optional golden hour portrait sessions available for sign up.
Friday: Painting Workshop 10 a.m – 4 p.m. with a break for a delicious healthy catered lunch and snacks, 4pm-5pm pool, beach, free time, Optional Art Walk and Dinner in historic downtown Charleston 5 p.m. – 9 p.m.
Saturday: Painting Workshop 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. with a break for another delicious healthy catered lunch and snacks, 4pm-6pm free time, pool, beach, Optional Dinner at local favorite restaurant Taco Boy 6 p.m. – 9 p.m.
Sunday: Those who are lodging at the Beach House will need to check out by 9 a.m.
MATERIALS
Participants are responsible for bringing their own paint. All other materials will be provided including a supply buffet of fun supplies for you to play and experiment with!
REFRESHMENTS
We will provide cocktails and snacks at our opening Flower Crown Circle on Thursday evening. Healthy and delicious lunches on Friday and Saturday will be catered by a local chef. An abundance of healthy gourmet snacks and refreshments will be available throughout the weekend. All other meals will be on your own. On both Friday and Saturday evenings we’ll have the option of gathering as a group for dinner at a local restaurant, payment for dinner and drinks at these optional events is your responsibility.
COMMUNITY
We will be limited to 12 participants to ensure an intimate community with plenty of personal attention, one-on-one support, and plenty of space to explore and create.
As a bonus we’ll have celebrated photographer Andrea Corrona Jenkins, also known for her blog Hula Seventy, with us all weekend offering portrait sessions. Are you needing a lovely new head shot? Want to see yourself with new eyes? Let Andrea photograph you in our beautiful, creative, relaxed setting. Andrea has been making portraits of women for nearly a decade now and would love to capture your true beauty, she’ll be available throughout our weekend together offering sign up for private portrait shoots either on the beach or at the mansion….both stunning locations! Sessions with Andrea will be available for sign up when our weekend begins, and will be $70 including 5 high resolution images. Andrea is amazing at capturing the beauty heart and soul of each person she photographs!

ACCOMMODATIONS
Accommodations and transportation are not included in the $549 price of the workshop. However, Charleston has an endless selection of hotel, airbnb and vrbo options. We’ll be creating a private Facebook group for our participants where you can organize with other participants to share rooms and rides if you like.
We are also offering a very limited number of 3 Night accommodations at the Beach House mansion, with Mati and Faith, lodging at the Beach House is first come first served and will give you 24 hour access to all of the Beach House amenities. You’ll have full access to the infinity pool and many lounge areas, expansive deck and views, outdoor shower, a short walk to the beach and restaurants, our workshop space and supply buffet so you can dive into your painting projects whenever you like, we’ll stock the Beach House fridge with healthy breakfast options for you to serve yourself….
The Beach House has three large luxurious private single bedrooms each with a queen sized bed and private en-suite bathroom, you can book one of these private rooms for $1295 which includes 3 nights luxury lodging along with everything else in the workshop cost. There is one luxurious twin share room, with two twin beds and private en-suite bathroom, this room can be booked for $1095 each, which includes 3 nights luxury lodging along with everything else in the workshop cost (the $549 art workshop fee is included in this price). {This room is SOLD OUT}.
PREREQUISITES
No experience is required to attend a workshop with Mati & Faith. We design our lessons to be accessible to students of all levels, as long as you approach the workshop with a willingness to experiment and a heart open to learning!
CANCELLATION POLICY
There are no refunds for this event. However, if you cancel prior to 30 days before the event, you will receive credit towards a future workshop or retreat with Mati & Faith.

Charleston weather is beautiful in early November with normal highs in the low 70’s and lows in the upper 50’s. Bring your swim suit if you’d like to swim in the ocean, pool, or simply soak in the sunshine. There is plenty of onsite parking if you are planning on driving. The closest airport is Charleston International Airport, which is about a half hour drive from the workshop location on beautiful Folly Beach. If you are looking for recommendations on where to stay we can offer ideas, Charleston has an endless amount of fantastic lodging options!
